Our Story

A partnership built on a pursuit of perfection

Nils Venge & Mark Carter

Since 2006, winemaker Nils Venge and vintner Mark Carter have built Envy as an intimate estate at the top of Napa Valley — a place to make the very best the valley can offer, and a welcoming home for the people and smaller producers who share that pursuit. On Tubbs Lane in Calistoga, Envy farms its own estate Cabernet Sauvignon, with a patio and tasting room made for lingering and views of Old Faithful just beyond.

It began with a wine list. From the Carter House Victorian and Hotel Carter to Restaurant 301 — whose cellar has held the Wine Spectator Grand Award since 1998 — Mark Carter built a reputation for finding the very best.

That pursuit led him to Nils Venge, the first winemaker to earn a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker on a domestic wine. The two shared a single ambition: to create the best Napa Cabernet that could be made. Nils was, as Mark puts it, “the perfect match on this quest for perfection.”

In 2006 they founded Envy on Tubbs Lane in Calistoga — a 17-acre estate at the top of the valley, with views of Old Faithful and a patio that invites you to linger. Today Envy produces roughly 2,500 cases a year of estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc, drawn from the estate vineyard and select Napa Valley sites.
